A 4K label costs a provider nothing to attach, and plenty attach it to whatever they were already sending. The question worth asking is whether the broadcaster produced the event in Ultra HD at all, because upscaling adds pixels without adding anything to look at. When 4K Is Worth Choosing, and When It Is Not
On a 55-inch screen or larger, watching sport or film, 4K earns its bandwidth. On a phone, a tablet or a small set, HD is indistinguishable and costs a quarter of the data. Because the 4K, HD and SD copies of the main channels sit next to each other in the list, that is a decision you make channel by channel rather than once at the checkout. A feed carrying roughly four times the pixels of Full HD, delivered over your broadband. The label on the channel describes what was sent, not what arrives: the bitrate behind it, your line, your decoder and the panel all have a say. A well-encoded HD feed frequently looks better than a starved 4K one.
What does a 4K feed need from my line?
Around 25 Mbps for a single stream, with headroom on top when other things in the house are using the connection. Consistency matters more than the peak figure. If you are also sending surround audio to a soundbar over the same link, a cable to the television removes most of the variables at once.
Which hardware handles 4K best?
Something with a proper decoder and a wired socket. An Nvidia Shield, a Formuler or MAG receiver, or a recent Fire TV Stick 4K Max all manage it. Older televisions are the usual bottleneck: a 4K panel from 2016 may decode the codec slowly, and its internal speakers will fold surround down regardless.
Is 4K charged separately?
No. Nothing in the line-up sits behind a more expensive term, including the Ultra HD feeds and any second audio track a channel carries. The term you choose sets the length and how many streams run at once, and nothing else. What varies is the individual channel, not the price you paid.
Can I get 8K?
Not as live television, and nobody selling it is being straight with you. Almost no broadcaster produces in 8K, and the bandwidth a live 8K stream would need is far beyond a domestic line. The name of this service is a nod at where screens are heading; what we deliver today is 4K, FHD and HD.
Why does 4K stutter when HD is fine?
Because 4K asks several times more of the same connection, and the gaps that HD absorbs become visible. Try a cable first, then the lighter copy of the same channel. If a single channel misbehaves while everything else is steady, tell support which one, because that points at the feed rather than at your setup.
