Setting it up, in order

1. Decide whether this is the right first player for you

   For almost everybody it is, and the reason is not the one usually given. Smarters is free and runs nearly everywhere, which is what every review mentions. The thing that matters more, particularly here, is that its audio-track and subtitle controls sit one tap away during playback instead of three menus deep. If anyone in your household switches commentary or watches in a second language, start here even if you later move to something else.

2. Install it the way that suits your device

   On Android, Google TV and iOS, the store has it and there is nothing to think about. On a Fire TV Stick you need Downloader and the sideloading setting, which the Firestick walkthrough covers step by step. On Windows and macOS there is a desktop build on the developer site. The name varies slightly between platforms, which is normal rather than a sign you have the wrong one.

3. Choose the right login type

   On first run it offers several ways in. Take Login with Xtream Codes API, not the playlist option, even though both reach the same line-up. The Xtream login carries the group structure, the guide data, the on-demand sections and, importantly, the list of audio tracks and subtitles each feed holds. A plain playlist gives you a flat list of streams and none of that.

4. Enter the three values carefully

   The name field is only a label, so call it whatever you like. The username and password are case sensitive and the server address must be exact, including whether it begins http or https and whether it ends in a port number. Type rather than guess, and if you are on a television remote, use the phone keyboard if the platform offers one. Most failed logins are a mistyped server address rather than a wrong password.

5. Wait out the first load

   A line-up of this size takes up to a minute to download the first time, and the screen can look like nothing is happening. Do not press anything and do not restart the app. Once it completes, the list is cached and subsequent launches are quick.

6. Find the controls that make this player worth using

   With a channel playing, press the centre button or tap the screen to bring up the overlay. Along it you will find the audio track selector and the subtitle selector. Open the audio one on a channel you know carries more than one language and confirm switching works. Do the same with subtitles on a film. This is the two minutes that most people never spend, and it is the difference between a subscription that suits your household and one that quietly does not.

7. Set the playback engine if something stutters

   In Settings, Player Settings, you can choose between the built-in decoder and hardware acceleration. If a feed stutters on one device and plays perfectly on another, switching this is the first thing to try, and it fixes a good share of the cases that look like a bad feed. Leave it alone if everything is already smooth.

8. Trim the list and confirm

   Hide the groups nobody in the house will open and mark your regular channels as favourites. Then watch something familiar for a few minutes and listen on whatever you normally listen on. A player that loads, switches tracks and holds a steady picture on a channel you know well is a finished setup.

When something is wrong

It says the login is invalid but the details are right

Check the server address first, character by character, including the scheme at the front and any port at the end. Then check for a space added by autocorrect at the end of the username. Those two account for the large majority. If both are clean, send us what you entered and we will compare it against the account.

The app loads but the channel list is empty

The credentials were accepted and the list download failed. Force-close and reopen. If it is still empty, the account may not have finished provisioning, which is a question for the chat rather than something to reinstall over.

No audio-track option appears on any channel

Check you logged in with Xtream Codes rather than with a playlist, because a playlist does not carry the track list. If you used the playlist route, log out and add the account again the other way.

The picture stutters on one device only

Try the player settings described above, switching between hardware and software decoding. If that does not settle it, the device is likely at the edge of what it can decode, so use the HD copy of the channel.

Subtitles are listed but never appear

Some feeds advertise a subtitle stream that carries nothing, which is the broadcaster rather than the player. Test with a film from the on-demand library, where subtitle streams are far more consistent, to establish which of the two you are looking at.
