Setting it up, in order

1. Be clear about what you are taking on

   TiViMate is the best player here for somebody who watches live television the way people watched it before streaming, and it is a poor first player. It asks you to understand playlists, guide sources and groups before it gives you anything, and then it gives you the closest thing to a cable box that exists on Android. If you want to be watching in five minutes, use Smarters today and come back to this when you have time.

2. Install it on the device itself

   TiViMate is in the Play Store for Android TV and Google TV. On a Fire TV Stick it installs through Downloader exactly as Smarters does, and the Firestick walkthrough covers that route. It is an Android-only player, so there is no version for a Samsung or LG television, an Apple TV or a computer.

3. Add the playlist as an Xtream login

   On first run it asks you to add a playlist. Choose the Xtream Codes option rather than the M3U one and enter the username, password and server address. The Xtream route gives TiViMate the group structure and the on-demand sections; the playlist route gives it a flat list and noticeably less to work with.

4. Let it process the guide

   TiViMate downloads the line-up and then the guide data, and the second part takes longer than people expect on a list of this size. Leave it to finish. When it has, you will have a programme grid covering the days ahead rather than a bare channel list, which is the entire reason for using this player.

5. Build the channel groups properly, once

   This is where the half hour goes and it is worth every minute. Use the settings to hide every group nobody in the house will open, then create your own groups from what remains. Somewhere between twenty and forty channels is where most households land. If two people watch in different languages, make a group each and name them plainly, because the point is that neither person has to scroll past channels meant for somebody else.

6. Find the audio and subtitle controls

   TiViMate handles tracks competently and hides them more than Smarters does, which is the one place beginners get stuck. With a channel playing, open the playback menu and look for the audio and subtitle entries. Confirm on a channel you know carries two languages that switching works. Knowing where this lives before you need it is worth doing now rather than during a match.

7. Decide about the Companion licence honestly

   The free version plays everything and is complete as a viewer. The paid Companion licence adds recording, multiple playlists and a few conveniences, and it is a modest annual or lifetime fee that goes to the TiViMate developer rather than to us. It is worth it if you record or run more than one subscription, and unnecessary if you do not. Nothing about your Tivo8k account changes either way.

8. Check it on a real evening

   Open the grid, pick something familiar, and let it run. Confirm the guide names match what is actually playing, that your groups behave, and that the sound is what you expect on your own speakers. A guide that matches reality and a steady picture on a familiar channel means the setup is done and will not need touching again.

When something is wrong

The guide is empty or shows the wrong programmes

Refresh the guide data from the settings rather than reinstalling. If it is still wrong on specific channels, tell us which ones, because guide accuracy varies by source and that is something we can look at.

TiViMate is not in the store on my device

It is Android-only, so it will not appear on a Samsung or LG television, an Apple TV or a computer. On a Fire TV Stick it installs through Downloader rather than from the Amazon store.

Recording is greyed out

Recording belongs to the paid Companion tier. The free version plays everything but does not record, and that is by the developer design rather than a limitation of your account.

The channel list is enormous and unusable

You have not yet hidden the unused groups. Do that before anything else: it is the step that makes this player pleasant, and skipping it is why some people give up on it.

Audio track switching cannot be found

It lives in the playback menu rather than on the main overlay, which is the usual point of confusion. If your household switches often, Smarters puts it closer to hand and there is no harm in keeping both installed.

Channel numbers do not match the guide

TiViMate numbers channels by the order of your own groups rather than by any broadcast numbering. Reordering a group changes them, which surprises people who expect cable-style numbering to be fixed.
