Setting it up, in order
Check the webOS version first
It determines which players will install, and it is a two-minute check that prevents an hour of frustration. Settings, General, About This TV shows the version. webOS 4 and later handles current players comfortably. Earlier than that and the store will simply refuse most of them, in which case the honest answer is an external device rather than a workaround.
Install a player from the LG Content Store
Press Home, open the LG Content Store, and search. Smart IPTV and a small number of alternatives are the usual candidates. As with Samsung there is no sideloading, so the store decides your options, and those options move around between regions.
Register the set if the player requires it
Several webOS players work from the MAC address of the television rather than from a login. The app displays that address together with the page to enter it on. Write it down: it belongs to the television, so replacing the set means going through registration again.
Give it the line-up
Where the player accepts an Xtream login, enter the username, password and server address from the chat. Where it only takes a playlist, use the M3U link instead. Prefer the Xtream option when both are offered, because it carries the group structure and the audio-track information with it rather than presenting a flat list.
Fix the audio pass-through setting
This is the one LG owners most often get wrong. Settings, Sound, Sound Out, then Additional Settings, and set the digital output to Pass Through if an external amplifier or soundbar is decoding. Leave it on PCM if the television is. The menu is two levels deeper than it ought to be, and a soundbar that never lights its surround indicator is nearly always this setting rather than a fault.
Organise the groups
webOS scrolls faster than Tizen but a list of this size is still unwieldy. Hide what nobody will watch and build a favourites group. If two people in the house watch in different languages, make one group each; it takes minutes and removes most of the daily friction.
Confirm the chain end to end
Open a channel you know well, listen on whatever you normally listen on, and check what the soundbar reports. Try the audio-track control if the player has one, then open a film and look at its subtitle options. If the sound is right and the picture is steady on a familiar channel, the setup is finished.
When something is wrong
The Content Store has nothing suitable
Common on older webOS versions and in some regions. There is no sideloading route on webOS worth recommending, so an external stick is the practical answer.
The app opens to a black screen
Usually a cached playlist that failed to refresh. Close the app completely from the recent-apps row, then reopen. If it persists, reinstall the player; on most webOS apps the registration survives.
4K feeds stutter while HD is flawless
The processor in an LG set typically lags the panel by a generation or two, so a 4K-capable screen can still be a slow decoder. Use the HD copy of the channel or move that television to an external device.
The soundbar shows stereo on everything
Almost certainly the pass-through setting described above, and occasionally the HDMI port: only the port marked ARC or eARC returns audio properly on most sets.
Magic Remote gestures fight with the player
The pointer can be awkward inside these apps. Pressing the wheel switches to directional control, which most people find considerably easier once they know it exists.
The app disappears after a webOS update
Occasionally an update removes apps installed from outside the main store listing. Reinstall from the Content Store; the registration generally survives and your account is unaffected.
Audio drops out for a second when changing channel
Usually the amplifier re-negotiating the format as it switches between a surround feed and a stereo one. Setting the output to PCM stops it at the cost of surround, which some people prefer and others do not.

Which is better for this, LG or Samsung?
Close, with LG slightly ahead on audio handling and Samsung slightly ahead on store availability. Neither matches a dedicated external device, and on either platform that is the upgrade worth making if the television is the weak link.
Does the LG store player cost anything?
Some carry a small one-off fee belonging to their developer, which is separate from your subscription. We do not receive any part of it and cannot waive it.
Can I get proper audio-track switching on webOS?
Partly. Some players expose it and some do not, and it is less consistent than on Android. If switching commentary or language matters in your household, add a small streaming device and use it for that television.
Will an older LG from 2015 work?
Generally no. The store will refuse the current players on that webOS version. An external stick is the only route, and it will also be quicker than the set would have been.
Is an LG soundbar required for pass-through?
Not at all, any soundbar or amplifier will do. What matters is that it is connected to the HDMI port marked ARC or eARC, and that the digital output is set to Pass Through rather than PCM.
Can I use a USB keyboard to set this up?
Yes, and on webOS it makes entering a long server address far less painful. Most USB keyboards work without any configuration at all.
Does the trial behave the same on webOS?
It does. It is a complete account for 24 hours, which is long enough to find out whether the store player on your particular set exposes what you need.
What is the single most common LG problem?
The pass-through setting, by a wide margin. A soundbar that never reports surround is almost always a television still decoding to PCM before sending anything on. It is two menus deep, it takes ten seconds to change, and it accounts for more support conversations on LG sets than everything else combined.
Can I connect headphones to an LG set for late viewing?
Most recent LG televisions pair Bluetooth headphones directly, under Sound Out, and it is a practical answer for watching late without disturbing the house. Expect a small delay between picture and sound on some models; where that bothers you, a wired pair into the headphone socket avoids it entirely.
Does the television need to be on the same network as my phone?
Only if you are casting or using the phone as a remote. For ordinary viewing the television talks to our servers directly and nothing else in the house is involved, which is worth remembering when diagnosing a problem.
