There is no 8K live television to sell you, and any IPTV provider offering it is telling you something about themselves rather than about their service. That is an awkward sentence to publish under a name like ours, and it is the truthful one. What follows is what 8K is, why it has not arrived, what would have to change, and what we deliver instead.
The short version
Almost nothing is produced in 8K. No broadcaster runs an 8K channel you could subscribe to. A live 8K stream would need far more bandwidth than a domestic line provides. Tivo8k carries 4K, Full HD and HD, and the 4K is real.
What 8K actually means
8K describes a picture roughly 7,680 pixels wide by 4,320 tall: four times the pixel count of 4K and sixteen times Full HD. The number refers only to the grid. It says nothing about how much data fills that grid, which is the thing that decides whether a picture looks good.
That distinction is the whole story of this page. Resolution is cheap to advertise and expensive to deliver, because every pixel added has to be carried down the same line into your house.
Why it has not arrived, in order of difficulty
Almost nothing is shot in it. A handful of nature documentaries, some demonstration footage, a few sporting experiments. Drama, news, studio output and the overwhelming bulk of sport are produced in HD or 4K, and a broadcaster has no reason to re-equip for a format nobody can receive.
No broadcaster runs an 8K channel. Japan’s NHK has run 8K broadcasting experimentally for years, and it remains the exception that proves the rule. There is no 8K equivalent of Sky Sports or ESPN to carry, so there is nothing for a provider to relay even in principle.
The bandwidth is not there. A well-encoded 4K stream wants around 25 Mbps. An 8K stream at comparable quality would want several times that, sustained, per stream. That is beyond most domestic connections, and it is beyond what any provider could deliver to thousands of households at once at any sane price.
The decoders are uneven. Even where a television advertises 8K, its ability to decode a heavy 8K stream in real time from a network source is a different question from displaying an 8K test file from a USB stick.
What an 8K television actually does today
It upscales. Given a 4K or HD source, an 8K set uses its processor to guess at the pixels it does not have. Modern upscaling is genuinely impressive and it is still guessing: it can sharpen edges and smooth gradients, and it cannot recover detail that was never recorded.
The practical consequence is that an 8K television fed a good 4K feed looks very slightly better than a 4K television fed the same feed, and both look dramatically better than either fed a starved stream. The quality of the source outranks the resolution of the screen, every time.
So why is the brand called Tivo8k?
Because it reads as a name for a television service, and because screens are heading that way eventually. It is not a claim about what we deliver, and we would rather say that on a page of its own than let anyone infer otherwise from the logo.
What we actually carry is 4K, Full HD and HD, feed by feed, across 25,000+ channels and 120,000+ films and series. Which individual channels arrive in Ultra HD depends on the broadcaster rather than on us, and it changes. What to do with the money you were going to spend on 8K
If you are upgrading equipment with streaming in mind, the ranked list is not the one the shops use.
- A wired connection to the main television. The cheapest change available and the one that removes the most problems. A stick behind a television is in the worst wireless position in the room.
- Something decent to listen through. A soundbar or a pair of speakers changes an evening more than a resolution step does, and it is the half of the signal nobody markets.
- A device that passes audio through untouched. If you already own speakers, a decoder that folds surround to stereo before they hear it is wasting them.
- A 4K panel, if yours is older. Worth it. An 8K panel over a 4K one, for streaming, is not.
How to judge an 8K claim
If a provider advertises 8K channels, ask which ones and who broadcasts them. There is no good answer to that question today, and the response tells you how the rest of their claims are constructed. The same test works on “unlimited”, on invented uptime percentages and on review badges that cannot be clicked.
We would rather be judged on what we put in writing. The prices are published, the refund policy defines what it covers, and the trial is the whole service for 24 hours so you can check the picture and the sound on your own equipment before paying anybody.
When it does arrive
It will, eventually, and the order will be the familiar one: recorded content on physical media and platforms first, then a small number of live events, then ordinary channels years later. The same sequence played out with HD and then with 4K, and both took roughly a decade from first demonstration to routine availability.
