Setting it up, in order
Decide whether you actually want the playlist route
There are two good reasons to use one: you are testing something quickly, or your player supports nothing else. Outside those, the Xtream login is better in every respect. Deciding this first saves you setting up a device twice, because moving from a playlist to an Xtream login later means adding the account again from scratch.
Know what the link contains
An M3U link is one long web address that returns the whole line-up as a list. Your username and password are inside that address as parameters, which has an immediate consequence: the link is as sensitive as a password. Never paste it into a forum, a review or an uncropped screenshot.
Load it into a player
In VLC, Media then Open Network Stream, paste, and play. In a television player, find the add-playlist option and paste it there. In Smarters or TiViMate, the playlist option exists alongside the Xtream one, though we would steer you to the latter. The list builds in a few seconds to a minute depending on the device.
Add the guide separately if the player wants it
A playlist on its own usually carries no programme data, so a player that shows a guide will ask for an EPG address as well. That is the xmltv address we can send you. This is one of the practical differences between the two formats: with an Xtream login the player finds the guide by itself.
Accept what a flat list means in daily use
Groups become approximate or disappear, the on-demand library is often missing entirely, and the audio-track list a feed carries may not be exposed at all. None of this means the channels are different; it means the player has been given less to work with. If your household switches languages, this is the format least likely to let you.
Use it as a diagnostic, which is where it shines
Paste the link into VLC on a computer and open Tools, Codec Information while a channel plays. That panel shows the video codec, the resolution, and every audio track with its language. It is the fastest way to establish whether a channel genuinely carries a second language, and therefore whether your television player is hiding something or the feed simply does not have it.
Move to an Xtream login when you are settled
Once you know which device you are keeping, set it up again with the three values instead. You get the groups, the guide, the on-demand sections and the track lists, and it takes the same two minutes. Keep the playlist link for VLC, where it remains genuinely useful.
When something is wrong
The playlist opens but nothing plays
Copy the link again rather than retyping it: these addresses are long and a single wrong character breaks them silently. If a fresh copy still fails, send it back to us and we will check it against the account.
Channel names are missing or nonsensical
Normal for a flat playlist in a simple player. The names live in the list metadata and not every player reads it. An Xtream login solves it properly.
The guide is completely absent
Expected. A playlist carries no guide data. Add the xmltv address separately if the player supports it, or use the Xtream login, which fetches it automatically.
The on-demand library is nowhere to be found
Also expected. Films and series are exposed as categories through the Xtream login, and a plain playlist generally does not carry them at all.
The link worked last month and not today
Check first whether the term has ended, which is the usual explanation. If it is still active, the credentials may have been changed, so ask us in the chat rather than hunting for a fault on the device.
The list loads in VLC and not on the television
Some television players cap the size of a playlist they will accept. That is the app rather than the link, and it is a case where an Xtream login on a capable player is the fix.

Is M3U worse than Xtream?
For daily viewing, yes, and clearly so: no proper groups, usually no guide, often no on-demand section, and frequently no audio-track list. For a quick test in VLC it is the more convenient of the two.
Can I open the link in a browser?
It will download a text file rather than play anything, because it is a list rather than a stream. Use VLC or a proper player.
Is it safe to share my M3U link?
No. Your username and password are inside it. Treat it exactly as you would a password, and tell us at once if it has been posted anywhere public so we can change the credentials.
Which players still need M3U?
Chiefly VLC and some older television apps, Smart IPTV among them. Most current players prefer an Xtream login and will be better for it.
Can I edit the playlist to remove channels?
You can download it and edit it locally, and most people find hiding groups inside a player far less work. An edited local copy also stops receiving changes to the line-up, which is rarely what anyone wants.
Why does my player ask for both an M3U and an EPG address?
Because a playlist carries no guide data. The second field wants the xmltv address, which we can send. An Xtream login avoids the question by fetching both itself.
Is the M3U link different for each device?
No, it is one link for the account. That is also why it should be treated as a password: anyone holding it holds your credentials, since they are embedded in the address.
When should I definitely not use a playlist?
When it is the device you watch on every evening. A playlist gives a flat list, usually no guide, often no on-demand library, and frequently no audio-track selection. Keep it for VLC, where the codec panel makes it genuinely useful, and use an Xtream login everywhere else.
Does a playlist work in a web browser player?
Some web players accept one, and results vary considerably between them. For a quick check of whether the account itself is alive, the browser route we send is more dependable than pasting a playlist into an unfamiliar page.
Will the playlist update when the line-up changes?
Yes, provided you are using the link rather than a downloaded copy. The address is fetched fresh each time a player loads it, which is exactly why editing a local copy is a poor idea.
